Hey 2nd graders at St. Al’s and 4th graders at Westside and everybody else back home! Today has been an adventure for us since flying is not something we usually do. As I type this, we are flying over Alberta, Canada! We left Wisconsin this afternoon, flying out of the Outagamie County Airport. If you have never been there, it is a very tiny airport (which was good for me, Mrs. OVD, because I was really nervous). We flew on a very small plane to Minneapolis. It seemed like we had just taken off when we were already landing! It was pretty neat to see the Mississippi River from the air. Our Flat Musher enjoyed the ride!
Once we arrived at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport, we had to walk FOREVER to get to the concourse that our plane was leaving from to get to Anchorage. This plane is very big and has a really cool video screen in the seat in front of you—I can watch movies, TV, play games, listen to music, and watch the map to see where the plane is. Right now it is telling me that it is -61 degrees F outside the plane, and we have traveled 1,282 miles since Minnesota. We are 38,000 feet in the air! That is about 7 miles up! We are going 470 miles per hour—that’s very, very fast! This probably isn’t very exciting for all of you experienced flyers, but for me, this is pretty darn cool!
Our flight went well until about five hours into it. All three of us got air sick and, yes, we used those nice little bags! I guess we’ll be buying some Dramamine for the trip home. Then when we got to the airport, we got half of our luggage, but the other half was still in Minneapolis! The ironic part (ask your teacher about irony) is that this was our CARRY ON luggage that they forgot to put on the plane! When we were checking in they asked if anybody wanted to “gate check” their carry-ons because the flight was really crowded. This means you just give it to somebody as you’re getting on the plane, and they put it right on for you and give it back to you when you get off. We had to do this in Appleton because it was such a small plane, so we thought this would be a great idea in Minneapolis as well. It turns out somebody left it all sitting there! So they gave us some toiletries to get us through the night and assured us that our luggage was on a flight to Anchorage and would be here around 12:30 A.M. Hopefully, it will be delivered to our Bed and Breakfast before we head out for our adventure on Monday.
I didn’t make a video today, but I plan to tomorrow. So for now, enjoy the blog post and a few airport pictures. So far, Anchorage looks like Appleton, but I suspect tomorrow will be a whole different story!
